Australia is a vast island nation – Aviation connects Australians with each other and with the rest of the world. Worldwide there are strong incentives within the aviation industry to improve fuel efficiency as fuel costs represent more than 30% of airlines’ operating costs. Australia’s aviation network is one of the most efficient in the world, characterised by a modern fleet and world-leading air traffic management practices. Australia’s airlines are continuing to invest in modern, more fuel efficient fleets while our air navigation service provider, Airservices Australia, is continuing to improve air traffic management and operational procedures.
The Australian Government, through the Department, contributes to the prosperity of the economy and the wellbeing of all Australians by fostering a viable, competitive and safe aviation industry.
#Australia’s situation
Over the past two decades the efficiency of Australian aviation has improved significantly and Australia’s aircraft operations are very fuel efficient compared to global standards. Despite this, Australia’s domestic and international aviation carbon footprint is projected to grow at around 1.8% and 2.9% respectively per annum over the next two decades (see Section 3.1) due to growth in demand and this will require further efficiency improvements in an already highly efficient system.

#Future Of Aviation
The aviation industry is one we are heavily reliant on, and which greases the wheels of international commerce. When an airline is beset by strikes, affected by ash clouds or when they decide to lock-out its staff, the cost to national and international economies frequently reach billions in lost productivity. While Cisco projects that 90% of all data on-line will be video by 2014, and have managed to cut their own travel costs by 80% as a result of adopting their own telepresence systems, it seems like the rest of the economy is lagging behind, and that an interface hasn't been able to replace a human face in human interactions yet.
While money, music, games, and movies are all going digital, human trust hasn't been digitised - yet. Airlines play a central role in serving human, non-economic interests, and physical presence. For avid viewers of The West Wing, you'll have noticed the amount of travel and facetime spent by the key players like Sam Seaborn, CJ, and President Bartlet. Physical presence is not being overtaken by telepresence yet, but it is a formidable STEEP threat to the aviation industry.
#Priorities For the next Five Years
1] expand the international Aviation Hub with services from a range of domestic and international ports, especially in Asia.
2] Attract a full service international airline to operate direct flights to and from Darwin.
3] Develop regular international services or strategic charter programs.
4] Develop additional domestic linkages and improved air services .
5] Develop a complementary strategy on transport requirements within the northern territory which addresses regional airport infrastructure needs and
the development of air services to regional and remote centres including to tennant Creek and Katherine.
6] Assist aviation-related support industries to expand in the northern territory.
7] Align aviation industry development strategies and activities to help support other northern territory Government priorities outlined in Territory 2030 and Working Future programs and other transport strategies.
8] Work with the Australian Government to minimise the cost of providing aviation security at airports.
#Government involvement in the industry
The Australian Government is also responsible for aviation safety and security, air traffic management, critical airport infrastructure and other policy areas such as consumer affairs and environmental issues. the Australian Government released its National Aviation Policy White Paper in December 2009. the northern territory.Government contributed to the policy’s development through various submissions and representations to the Australian Government.
The northern territory Government will continue to monitor the implementation of the National Aviation Policy. it will work with the Australian Government to minimise any barriers to growth of the industry in the northern territory, and to pursue any opportunities that may arise due to changes in national aviation policy.the northern territory Government has responsibilities for encouraging trade, private sector investment and economic development, as well as providing
community, essential and emergency services. establishing a framework to develop air services and the aviation industry in the northern territory is an important part of this. this strategy outlines the northern territory Government’s priorities relating to improving airline capacity in the territory and how it will work with the industry to realise these in a coordinated and cooperative way.
Airline businesses operate in a highly competitive and commercial environment. While some consolidation has occurred in the global aviation market over recent years, the emergence of low cost airlines has challenged the dominance of legacy carriers and forced them to change their approach including withdrawing from unsustainable routes. Low cost airlines have forced innovation in the industry by operating new routes to new destinations and disregarding traditional marketing practices and distribution channels. technology is leveraged to further lower costs and provide convenient services for airline customers, for example, online check-in and mobile phone text message boarding passes.
